Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of space.
The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
