India's capital Rises to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali
On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" category.
Alarming Pollution Readings
Several parts of the city recorded an air quality index above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy level recommended by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times above safe standards.
Firecracker Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts
For the past four years, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.
However earlier this year, the current local government appealed to the judicial authority to request a modification of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and public health".
Legal Verdict and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judges complied with the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Many air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.
Regional Implications
The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from India following the events.
Chronic Environmental Issue
Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Around Diwali, the levels of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Multiple Pollution Factors
The problem in Delhi is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing toxic haze that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air sets in.
Medical and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing approximately 10k untimely deaths each year in the city.
